The Maharlika Livelihood Center is a redevelopment of the
existing market at a 3-hectare prime lot in Baguio City. The redevelopment
recognizes that the Baguio City Market is an important land use, a service
node, a tourist landmark and a terminus of the local movement system. The
redevelopment concept called for:
- Projecting in the buildings the spirit of Ifugao Architecture;
- Reduction of the mass of the existing Mar-bay Building (a proposed
17-storey edifice) so as not to mar the skyline of the Session Road
terminus;
- Pedestrianization of the area so that the major activities can continue
without disruption and the reduction of the pollution generated by motor
vehicles;
- Provision of underground parking in the market area;
- Provision of vehicular transfer points within the vicinity of the market
area;
- Provision of pedestrian movement facilities that are segregated from motor
vehicles;
- Provision of appropriate landscaping in the pedestrian-dominated areas;
and
- Provision of appropriate lighting and signages to blend with the landscape
design of the area.
