In conjunction with the President Ramos Administration's strategy to industrialize the Philippines by the year 2000, the Manila International Gateway seeks to capture a fair share of the rapidly expanding Asia-Pacific Rim trade. The project involves the construction of a new container seaport for post-panamax vessels and a new international airport as a future air transport hub for very large cargo aircraft (VLAC).

The project will help jump-start economic growth and decongest air and sea traffic in Metro Manila, the initial thrust being on international cargo transshipment. With the forecast in growth of tourism and foreign trade, these have to be sustained in a diversified economy.

As Sangley Point is in the proximity of the City of Manila, it provides an ideal setting and location for the project. The conceptual technical description looks at the rationale of implementing the project, its locational advantage as well as competitiveness in the South East Asian region, and its impacts to the global economy.
