As a response to the celebration of the 2000 International Year for the Culture of Peace, UNESCO provided the Mindanao Sate University and the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology funds for an initial study for the establishment of a Muslim Science Centrum, in Marawi City. Patterned after the Philippine Science Centrum in Manila, the Muslim Science Centrum shall replicate in the region the operations and facilities of the Centrum in Manila. Modifications are introduced to adopt to the specific needs, character and uniqueness of the people of Mindanao. The facility is envisioned to create and develop a science culture for a science-literate populace in the Mindanao Region. The Centrum shall provide relevant, interdisciplinary, interfacing and interactive exhibits to serve as vehicles in the promotion of peace and sustainable development.

The interactive exhibits in indoor galleries, as well as outdoors shall be venues for the science and technology applications that directly relate to the region in general and relevant to the science and technology applications of Mindanao in particular. In a larger viewpoint, interactive exhibits that showcase Muslim culture and its contributions to civilization that are evident and observable in the region shall be promoted.

The 4-story open-loft edifice for 400 daily visitors has a site of 5 hectares. It is located in the Marawi Campus of the Mindanao State University.

Based on the initial scheme of Engr. Sammy P. Alonto of MSU and Mr. Elmer Graza of the PFST, Architect G.V. Manahan developed the concepts for a gross floor area of 7,137 square meters. These consists of:

Planetarium- 420 sqm
Observatory- 100 sqm
